Long story shortened I have 7 parrots of varying sizes in cages in the family room. We just got an 11 mo. old bull terrier as a replacement companion for our pit bull. We also have 3 cats. I've never had a problem introducing all animals and peacefully co-existing until now. The bull terror (purposely misspelled) will not leave the birds alone, jumping on cages and barking.I'm concerned he will let one of them out of the cage and do some serious damage. I know he's still a pup but I haven't found a method of discipline that seems to faze him. Any ideas out there?

John,

Best of luck with your macaws. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time training them and they will be fabulous birds!

I just want to note that it is actually not "proper" or even standard protocol to ask permission to embed and comment on a video that has been posted on Youtube and has embedding enabled. Permission is implied. I'm sorry that I put you in a position where you felt you needed to take down your video, however.

While people can still link to your videos, I would suggest that you disable embedding if you are uncomfortable with people posting them on their websites. Under info and settings there is a place to click and disable that feature. (This is good advice for anyone actually.)

Dear Rebecca,
thank you for posting my video, even tho it is usually proper to ask for permission, I do not hold it against you.
As you said, I do not feel my bird had any negative experience with her first bath and equally important was the fact that she needed to be washed, not only sprinkled at that time.
I also showed and will show all her progress from a baby bird till her Free Flying adventures as I have done with my other 2 parrots. I am always eager to see new ideas and other people handling and developing with their birds, perhaps I could learn something from you, it would be nice to watch your parrots interacting with you.
I do think tho with a bit of nice soothing music and a cut or two I could have made this video look much more pleasing, however I choose not to do so as I try to show how I handle my birds in real life.

Thank You for posting such a nice article,

John

My conures taught me how to give baths: the first one used to hang out with me while I washed dishes, and pretend she was getting in the water. I saw, and adjusted temp and flow to a safe level, and encouraged her. She could have been the poster bird for "Hokey-Pokey" when bathing! The second bird just continued the whole "tradition".

Lorri,

That is excellent advice! Anything that you can do to set your parrot up to have a positive experience (like putting down a towel so she won't slip) is a wonderful idea!

I always take a dish cloth and run it under warm water and place it over the center divider for my birds. It gives them more traction and the surface isn't cold and uncomfortable on their feet.

The first video, there was zero reinforcement for the bath. When the bird finally ran for it, he picked her up and held her feet so she couldn't escape again.
I *think* that if he had stopped when she first started showing signs of discomfort, backed off on the shower then tried again in a monute or so, she would have been more willing to try again. A VERY obvious difference in the first and second videos... The BTM was more than willing to come back and explore...
