Psittacus erithacus tyrannosaurus vox (aka Ty)
I thought I would start something new here on Heckled. Anakin, my falcon has a whole book dedicated to him, but poor Ty, who has had just as much influence in my life is merely mentioned. He deserves a bit of his own story. Hence, Tuesdays with Ty.
I’ve always felt that falconry has greatly influenced my spirituality, but it has been my time with parrots that has taught me the most about making the most of your relationships. Laugh, play and pay attention to what makes you happy seems to be what I constantly hear my parrots tell me.
So meet Ty. He came into my life 15 years ago as a 6 week-old chick, the beginnings of red just barely sparking from his rump. I chose him from a clutch of three. His breeder was just a hobbiest, a woman in Temecula with one pair of African grey parrots. Her husband had promised her she could keep him, the big one in the clutch, if no one bought him at the bird mart. Unfortunately for her, when I picked him up he spoke to me, literally. And I knew I had to take him home. What I didn’t know was that he would inspire me to turn my world upside down and chase after dreams I didn’t even know I had…but I suppose that is a story for next week.
