Friday’s Favorite Feathers

It’s not a parrot, but it’s still one of my absolute favorite birds and it’s also:

I’ve loved the yellow-billed magpie since I was an undergraduate at UC Davis when they were abundant and typically corvid charming. I wanted to raise one, really REALLY bad. I used to watch them for hours, dream about taming one that still flew wild.
Now, with West Nile, their numbers have been halved and there are far fewer than I remember when I was in Northern California 20 years ago. I’m glad to be near them again though and thrilled to hear they are making a comeback.
Hooray for the black, white and yellow!

Oh good, I’m not the only one who has thought of taming a magpie! There are lots of Black-billed Magpies here in western Canada and I think they’re beautiful.

From the time I started talking, my parents called me Magpie and I’ve always loved the birds, they’re beautiful.
