Plus, hasn't anyone ever noticed that hawks, owls falcons and eagles eat other birds like they're going out of style... it's their natural food source...

This post made my morning! My African grey parrot is, as we speak, eating some chicken bone marrow and having a blast! Your way of thinking really put things in perspective for me.

Meddy is currently having the equivalent of a bird filet mignon.

When I first started working with feral chickens, I used "chicken"-flavored dry cat food. They loved it. Once I gave them the remains of a drumstick, and the ensuing feeding frenzy would make Jaws look tame.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the whole notion of "cannibalism" must be a human construct. "Food" is just so damned weird anyway. . . .

Barb-- I could talk about how cat poo has a high protein content and yadadada, but you've already got the training solution covered.

Cat poo breath is the worst though. Blahhhh!

I feed my parrots chicken bones as well. In fact, in the first manuscript of A Parrot for Life, I wrote about it as good enrichment. However, I took it out of the book after several people gave me documented cases of parrots with crops impacted by chicken bones.

I still give my birds chicken bones (and they like the tips of crab legs too) but I always warn people that crop impaction is a possibility if your bird actually EAT the bone and not just the marrow.

Something to think about and to pass on. I don't agree with fear mongering, but it doesn't hurt to share useful and documentable info.

Thanks for reading!!

I let my Jazz chew on chicken bones all the time. She liked busting them all up and being
she does't play with toys very much it's a great way for her beak to get a much needed
work out.
I always joke and say she's eating her
Aunt Herriot or whatever when she's chewing
on a chicken bone : )
