Have a Plan

Scarlet Macaw by SMercury98.

Scarlet Macaw by SMercury98.

A man is suing a prison for allegedly not allowing him to contact someone to care for his parrot upon his arrest. He claims that its the prison’s fault his scarlet macaw passed away. I suspect there is much more to this story, but it still makes me sad. Did no one know he was in jail and deduce that his parrot might need to be fed? There must be more to this story.

One of the points that I made in my book “A Parrot for Life” is that you have to have a plan if you live alone. The year I got appendicitis I wasn’t planning on stopping into the doctors office and ending up in the hospital. I did however plan by leaving a key to my apartment in my desk at work. My friend Sarah knew where I had left a key and that if anything happened to me, someone should go feed the parrots and the falcon. Fortunately, I was working at a zoo at the time, so there was an abundance of potential temporary pet sitters.

Would your animals be okay if you were hit by a bus and in a coma for a week? Do you have a plan?

Wow, since I live alone, what you wrote really hit home so I just emailed my best friend & my Daddy who both have a key to my house & my alarm code to tell them to make sure my birds get fed & taken care of and where the bird food is in the house. I had already made sure my brother would adopt my birds should I die. (He loves parrots as much as I do.)
Thanks so much for this wakeup call.
